You weren't able to connect with them either, they were walking in a different direction than you. (Not sure about the stairs part) the stairs are you moving through the years and finding your safe haven, you're white bathroom with the book. The books were your escape from the black and white. As for the victorian age woman, she's probably aprt of the picture-esque world you wish for.
